A safety switch is designed to react in milliseconds when electricity takes an unsafe path, such as through a damaged appliance, faulty wiring or a person. Knowing how to test a safety switch gives you a simple way to check that this critical protection is responding when it should. It takes only a minute, but it needs to be done properly.

What if the safety switch trips but will not reset?
A safety switch that will not reset may be doing its job by detecting a fault somewhere on the circuit. The fault could be as simple as a damaged appliance or moisture getting into outdoor equipment. It can also point to deteriorated wiring, a faulty power point, a water-affected fitting or an issue within a hardwired appliance.
